Abstract

The fading of local culture in the eyes of the urban community has been a challenge for a long time. Efforts to preserve culture are not only by maintaining the existence of existing urban heritage, but can be in the form of forming a new forum as a center for cultural development. The fading form of culture, namely the culture of reading and fine arts, the city of Palembang as the capital of South Sumatra Province, including the area with the level of literacy and appreciation of art belonging to the lower middle class. Therefore, the facilities for developing literacy and art are needed, namely public libraries and art galleries in order to boost public appreciation of art from local artists and attract public interest in preserving reading culture. Design method with data collection (observation and literature study) and analysis of design requirements. The theme in the design of this Public Library and Art Gallery is Modern Forms of Cultural Expression, which is an effort to create local cultural expressions that are packaged in modern technology and in harmony with the Regionalism Architecture approach, supported by the concept of Palembang's typical woven fabric, namely songket.
