Abstract

Background: Cervical cancer is a malignant cervical disease. The incidence of cervical cancer in the world as much as 7.9% (IARC, 2014). The high number of cervical cancer patients in Indonesia, the Whould Health Organization (WHO) places Indonesia as the country that has the most cervical cancer patients in the world and ranks second after breast cancer. New cases of cervical cancer accounted for 20,928 people and the number of deaths from cervical cancer reached 10.3% (WHO, 2014). The prevalence of cervical cancer in southern Sumatra is 0.7% equivalent to 5,500 people. Early prevention of cervical cancer is one of them is pap smear. Pap smears are the examination of cells in the cervix to find abnormal changes in cervical uterine cells to detect whether early cervical pre-cancer lesions are detected (Haroon & Cui, 2012). In order to increase the knowledge of women about cervical cancer reproduction health promotion is required is the importance of pap smear examination. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effect of health promotion on knowledge of the importance of pap smear examination. Method: This research design is Quasy experiment with proportional random sampling one group pre-test and post-test. The sample size is 64 respondents, drawn from the population of 154 women aged 20 - 55 years old in Rw 05 Kalurahan Talang Betutu. The collection of pretest and posttest knowledge data using the same questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using Wilcoxon mean difference test. The study was conducted in March 2016. Result: Based on data analysis result obtained average knowledge before given health promotion equal to 6,58 and average knowledge after health promotion increased to 16,57. Based on Wilcoxon statistical test obtained p-value of 0.001 <0.05, then it is concluded there is influence health promotion to the importance of papsmear examination.
