Abstract

Background: Clinical chemistry examination is an examination activity related to clinical specimens. Electrolytes examination (sodium, potassium, and chloride) is one of the clinival chemistry examinations. On examination of potassium one of the important things in the pre-analytic stage is patient preparation. Patient preparation that must be considered is paying attention to body position because to normalize body fluid balance from changes in position, it is recommened that the patinet sit quietly for at least 15 minutes before taking venous blood. In the clinical laboratory, it was found that blood was drawn directly on the patient without having to wait for 15 minutes to sit and rest. Meanwhile, for not resting, there is no standard that states taht venous blood is taken directly without resting. This study aims to see the difference in serum potassium levels without resting and resting 15 minutes before taking venous blood. Method: This type of research is a analytical observational using One Static Group Comparison. The subjects of this study werestudents of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Musi Charitas Chatolic University who were selected by total sampling. Examination of serum potassium levels using the EasyLyte Na/K/Cl Aanlyzer using the Ion Selective Electrode method. Samples were taken by being treated without resting and resting 15 minute before taking venous blood. The data from the sample measurements were then tested using the Paire T-Test. Result: The sample examined as many as 28 samples had an average potassiun level test result in examination of serum potassium levels treated without rest is a 3,85 mEq/L and the average potassium level test result in rest 15 minutes before taking venous blood is 3,92 mEq/L. The result were statistically tested and showed a meaningfull difference of p=0,081 >0,05. Conclusion: There is no difference in the results of examination of serum potassium leves without resting adan resting 15 minutes.
