Abstract

Stroke is the second leading cause of mortality and the third cause of disability in the world. There are 5.5 million deaths due to stroke every year. Currently the risk of stroke has increased to 1 in 4 people. Diabetes mellitus is one of the risk factors that cause stroke, but the behavior of people with diabetes mellitus in controlling blood sugar levels is still relatively bad, has a bad diet and does not comply with diabetes mellitus medication, it is important for people with diabetes to know the risk of stroke. This type of research is quantitative with a descriptive correlational research design and a cross sectional approach. The sample in this study were 31 respondents who were taken by the total sampling method. Data were collected using a questionnaire and the data were analyzed using the Kendall Tau test. The results of this study indicate that the majority of knowledge of stroke risk in the good category are 24 respondents (77.4%), while the stroke prevention behavior in the good category are 19 respondents (61.3%). The results of statistical tests using Kendall Tau showed p value of 0.808 > 0.05 and r value of 0.041, which means that there is no significant relationship between knowledge of stroke risk and stroke prevention behavior with the strength of the correlation at the level of weak strength. Respondents are expected to improve their behavior to prevent stroke such as maintaining stable glucose levels, doing regular exercise, and being obedient to taking diabetes medication.
