Abstract

Background: Examination of glucose levels of the main specimen, namely serum. Serum was obtained by centrifuging the blood collection tube. The plain vacutainer tube is used as a container for collecting blood in clinical chemistry examinations and there is another tube, namely the serum separator vacutainer tube which has a clot activator and a gel. However, gel components can affect the concentration and instability of certain analytes. Objective study: To know glucose levels using a plain vacutainer tube and serum separator vacutainer tube with a Chemistry Analyzer. Methods: This study is quantitative research with an analytical observational research design that is a cross-sectional approach. The subjects of this study were 32 students who had met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Venous blood collected in plain vacutainer tubes and serum separator vacutainer tubes, is processed into serum, and then glucose level is measured with a chemistry analyzer. Statistical test using Paired T-test with 95% confidence level. Results: The Average random glucose level using the tube plain vacutainer was 79,40 mg/dl. The average random glucose level using a vacutainer serum separator tube was 79,56 mg/dl. Using paired t-test we obtained p=0,382 (p>0,05), which means, there is not the difference in random glucose levels between plain vacutainer tubes and serum separator vacutainer tubes. Conclusion: Determination of random glucose levels using plain vacutainer tubes is compatible to serum separator vacutainer tubes. The serum separator vacutainer tubes is therefore recommended for determining random glucose level in the laboratory. Recommendation: Serum separator vacutainer tubes can be used as alternative tubes for glucose testing.
