Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to dig up the eleventh graders’ common grammatical mistakes in speaking performance at Xaverius 2 Senior High School Palembang. In this research, the researcher conducted an analytical study. The sample of the research was XI MIPA graders which consisted of 36 students. The researcher used convenience sampling technique. Speaking test and grammatical test checklist were used as the data collection instruments. Miles and Huberman model was used in this study to analyse the data. It was obtained that grammatical errors were identified in students’ speaking performance. It covers errors in the production of the verb groups (14%), errors in the distribution of verb groups (11%), miscellaneous errors (38%), errors in the use of preposition (17%), and errors in the use of article (21%). The finding of this study is expected to bring additional recommendation in building grammatical awareness in foreign language teaching context. Keywords: speaking performance, grammatical errors
