Abstract

ABSTRACT In the recent years, the use of English as one of International languages becomes more important due to globalization. Writing is considered as the most complex skill among four English skills. The complexity of English writing generates a way to make it easier for EFL students. Indonesian students have a tendency to write in their mother tongue first before they translate it into English. The aim of this study was to investigate cross-linguistic influence (CLI) on students’ writing both in grammar and lexis. This research employed qualitative research method, particularly descriptive study. Forty eleventh grade students of one of private senior high schools in Palembang, South Sumatera were involved as participants. The sample was selected using theory or concept sampling technique. The data of this research utilized writing test which were analyzed using CLI rubric. The results were analyzed using Miles and Huberman (1994) model. The researcher found out that CLI was found on participants’ texts, mainly in part of speech of lexical aspect. Moreover, predication of the syntactic aspect became the second most affected area. It was hoped that the result of the study would contribute to the development of English language teaching and learning in Indonesia.
