Abstract

ABSTRACT The teaching process in speaking English is difficult for some teachers. Teaching monotonous speech, which focuses on theories and books between students and teachers, causes less interaction. The purpose of this research was to improve beginner's English skills and specifically speaking skills. Twenty novitiates were involved as respondents from this study who were selected using total sampling techniques. Furthermore, this study applied a questioning strategy in the Novitiate class in developing their speaking skills. This research was conducted from February to March 2019 at Palembang Novitiate. Data were collected by speaking tests using the Brown rubric. Paired t-test was used to analyze data and got results. The results of this study indicate the scores increased in the post-test. In addition, the percentage analysis was used to temporarily produce the results of the questionnaire. Keywords: Questioning strategy, speaking ability
