Abstract

Cholesterol is a blood fat synthesized in the liver and found in red blood cells, cell membranes, and muscles. In some laboratories, the total cholesterol examination only uses serum samples as a total cholesterol examination material. Examination of total cholesterol can use serum or plasma samples (Heparin or EDTA). Objective:To find out the results of total cholesterol examination using serum and plasma EDTA. Methods: This type of research is analytic observational conducted on 30 students of the Faculty of Health Sciences majoring in TLM, according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Blood samples were collected in red and purple tubes. The research design is one static Group Comparison. Research Results: The number of respondents was 30 people with an average cholesterol level using serum of 194.3 mg/dL and an average cholesterol level using plasma EDTA of 197.6 mg/dL. The data on the normality test were normally distributed, then continued with a parametric test in the form of Paired sample T Test with a significant value of 0.358, α = 0.05 which showed no difference in total cholesterol levels using serum and plasma EDTA. Conclusion: From the results of this study it can be concluded that there is no difference in total cholesterol levels using serum and plasma EDTA. Suggestion : For laboratory officers to check total cholesterol should use serum. For further researchers, use a larger sample.
