Abstract

English has become a global language and also a necessity for most students to communicate with other people. The problem is speaking became the most difficult skills learners have to face. Listening to English songs is a habit that can improve speaking skill. This study aimed to determine whether there is correlation between habit of listening to English songs and speaking ability of tenth grade students in a private vocational high school Palembang. The research method used was correlation method. The total number of the student was 100 students. The sample was 80 students taken by purposive sampling technique. The instruments in collecting data were questionnaire and oral interview test. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of habit of listening to English songs and oral interview test was used to collect the data of speaking ability. In analyzing the data, the writer used Pearson Product Moment Formula. The correlation between two variables was positive since the result of the computation showed that the correlation coefficient (r) is 0.353. In conclusion, there was a correlation between habit of listening to English songs and the speaking ability of the tenth grade students of a private vocational high school Palembang.
