Abstract

Background: Hypertension and diabetes mellitus are degenerative diseases or non-communicable diseases whose numbers are increasing every year. Hypertension and diabetes mellitus are the two comorbid diseases that most often cause death in COVID-19 patients. National and global data, these two comorbidities are the most common comorbidities found in COVID-19 patients. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of comorbid hypertension and diabetes mellitus on the incidence of COVID-19 at Siti Khadijah Hospital Palembang. Methods: This study uses secondary data of COVID-19 patients with purposive sampling technique, using an analytical survey design with a case-control approach and correlation analysis using the Phi Coefficient and effect analysis using Binary Logistics Regression. Results: Most of the respondents were female as many as 217 respondents (53.7%), elderly as many as 291 patients (72.03%), did not have hypertension as many as 330 respondents (81.7%) and did not have a history of DM as many as 298 respondents. (73.8%). The results of the bivariate analysis stated that there was a significant relationship between hypertension (p = 0.005) and diabetes mellitus (p = 0.000) and the incidence of COVID-19. There was an effect between comorbid hypertension (p = 0.007; = 0.746; OR = 2.109) and diabetes mellitus (p = 0.000; = -1.181; OR = 0.307) on the incidence of COVID-19 (R2 = 0.104). Suggestion: For people, especially those who have a history of hypertension and DM, to better maintain stable blood pressure and blood sugar, and adhere to health protocols. For health institutions, it is expected to provide education on the dangers of covid for people with DM and hypertension. For further research, it is expected to be able to analyze more deeply the factors that influence the incidence of COVID in patients with DM and hypertension.
