Abstract
Breastfeeding is a natural process carried out by the mother after giving a birth. The success of breastfeeding might be influenced by proper and correct exercises and assistance to the mother. Some influential factors of breastfeeding are the assistance of health workers and the level of maternal knowledge in breastfeeding. A forgoing study showed as many as 40% of mothers did not breastfeed their babies because they felt pain when breastfeeding and swelling in the breast. The percentage of babies receiving exclusive breastfeeding in 2018 in Indonesia was 65.16%, and it was 60.43% in Palembang. The percentage of exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia, in Palembang especially, has not reached the target set by the Government of Indonesia, 90%. Therefore this research is aimed at exploring the experience of health workers in assisting primiparous mothers in breastfeeding at Private Hospitals in Palembang. Qualitative method with a phenomenological approach was used. The sampling technique was purposive sampling with a total of 4 health workers. The data were obtained by in-depth interviews in all four samples. The research revealed six themes: 1) the feeling of health workers assisting primiparous mothers in breastfeeding, 2) the perception of health workers towards primiparous mothers in breastfeeding, 3) barriers to health workers in assisting primary mothers in breastfeeding, 4) efforts in dealing with obstacles, 5) expectations of health workers in assisting nursing mothers, and 6) breastfeeding techniques taught by health workers in assisting breastfeeding. By the results, it was expected that health workers could be more attentive in assisting mothers in breastfeeding and able to provide adequate health facilities in assisting them
