Abstract

Children who experience parental loss and subsequently move from their nuclear family to an orphanageface changes that involve not only their living environment but also their routines, social relationships, and daily demands for adjustment. This transition may result in homesickness, sadness, difficulties in adaptation, and emotional distress. However, social support and coping strategies may help children deal with these changes. This study aims to examine the dynamics of the transition experiences of orphaned children from nuclear families to orphanages. This study employed a qualitative approach using a phenomenological method. The participants consisted of three children aged 10–18 years who had lived in an orphanage for at least one year and were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The findings revealed three superordinate themes: dynamics of change, social support, and coping strategies. The three participants experienced changes in routines, rules, social environments, and feelings of longing for their families and homes. Support from peers, caregivers, older foster children, and family members helped participants cope with the transition process. The coping strategies included writing diaries, sharing experiences, listening to music, managing emotions, and changing their perspectives toward problems. Overall, the transition process demonstrated a movement from emotional responses toward adaptive abilities, positive reappraisal, and emotional maturity.
