Abstract

This study aims to describe the daily life experiences of elderly individuals living in nursing homes and those living with their families. A descriptive qualitative method with thematic analysis was employed. The study involved four elderly participants residing in Palembang City, consisting of two who lived with their families and two who lived in a nursing home. All participants were female, aged 62–65 years, able to communicate verbally, and had lived in their respective living environments for at least six months. Data were collected through three semi-structured interviews with each participant, conducted from June 19 to June 27, 2026. The results showed differences in the experiences of elderly individuals based on their living environment. Those living with their families experienced greater involvement and closeness in family life, changes in family togetherness, and efforts to maintain independence and avoid becoming a burden to their families. Meanwhile, those living in nursing homes experienced longing for their families, adjustment to life in the nursing home, limitations in daily activities, and relationships with the surrounding environment. Overall, the living environment contributes to differences in elderly individuals’ experiences, particularly in social relationships, daily activities, and the process of adapting to changes in life.
