Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in improving the reading and speaking skills of eighth-grade junior high school students. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving one English teacher and 60 students. The data were collected through tests, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The findings showed an increase in students' reading and speaking scores during the implementation of PBL. The mean reading score increased from 92.30 to 97.63, while the mean speaking score increased from 67.63 to 80.48. The questionnaire and interview results also revealed that PBL increased students’ participation, confidence, motivation, and collaboration in learning English, although several challenges such as time limitations, differences in students’ abilities, and classroom management were encountered. Therefore, it can be concluded that Project-Based Learning is an effective method for improving students’ reading and speaking skills in English learning.
