Abstract
Background: The aging process in the elderly causes physiological and metabolic changes that can affect uric acid and blood glucose levels. Hyperuricemia is known to play a role in oxidative stress and insulin resistance, but the relationship between uric acid levels and random blood sugar levels in the elderly still shows mixed results. Objective: To determine the relationship between uric acid levels and random blood sugar levels in the elderly. Methods: This study used an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 32 elderly residents of the Dharma Bhakti Nursing Home in Palembang who were selected according to inclusion criteria. Uric acid levels were measured using the Uricase Enzymatic method, while random blood sugar levels were measured using the GOD-PAP method on the Bio System BA 200 device. Data analysis used the Pearson correlation test with a 95% confidence level. Results: The average uric acid level among the elderly was 5.04 mg/dL, while the average random blood glucose level was 107.87 mg/dL. The Pearson correlation test results showed a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.178 with a significance value of p = 0.329 (p > 0.05). Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between uric acid levels and blood sugar levels in the elderly. Recommendation: Future studies are recommended to use a larger sample size, consider confounding factors, and include other glycemic parameters to obtain more comprehensive results. Keywords: uric acid, random blood glucose, elderly
