Abstract

Background: The Musi River is used by the community for various daily needs, but domestic, industrial, mining, and transportation activities have the potential to cause heavy metal pollution, particularly iron (Fe) and cadmium (Cd). Continuous exposure to heavy metals can disrupt hematopoiesis and affect platelet formation, thus posing a health risk for coastal communities. Objective: To determine the levels of iron and cadmium in the Musi River waters and their relationship to platelet counts in coastal communities. Methods: A quantitative study with an analytical observational design. Water samples were collected at RT 03, Mata Merah Village, Banyuasin 1 District, Banyuasin Regency, and blood samples were collected at the Hematology Laboratory of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Musi Charitas Catholic University, Palembang. The study sample consisted of 39 water sampling points: 29 from residential reservoirs and 10 from the Musi River. Thirty-nine respondents aged 20-65 were selected using a non-probability sampling technique. Data analysis was performed using the kendalls tau test. Results: The average iron level in the water is 0.14 mg/L, the average cadmium is 0 mg/L, and the average platelet count is 315.1 x 10³/μL. The Kendall's tau test results show that there is no relationship between iron and platelet count with p = 0.676 (> 0.05) and cadmium cannot be linked to platelet count with p (< 0.05) because there is no cadmium detected in the Musi River However, there were no cadmium levels in the Musi River. Conclusion: Iron levels were not correlated with platelet count, while cadmium was not detected in water samples, so a correlation with platelet count cannot be proven. Suggestion: Further research is recommended using more sensitive methods, such as AAS or ICP-MS, to more accurately detect heavy metal levels. Keywords: Musi River, iron, cadmium, platelets.
