Abstract
Domestic violence (DV) is a serious problem that is still experienced by many women in Indonesia, but most cases are never reported to the authorities. One of the psychological factors behind this condition is the phenomenon of self-silencing, namely the tendency to suppress thoughts, feelings, and needs in order to maintain relational closeness and avoid conflict (Jack & Dill, 1992). This study aims to explore the dynamics of self-silencing in a female survivor of domestic violence with the initials Y (mother) who married due to premarital pregnancy with a background of religious differences and physical limitations. This study uses an instrumental single case study approach. Data collection through online semi-structured interviews with the main subject and two significant others (the subject's older sibling and child). The results show that the four components of self-silencing are depicted with distinctive characteristics: (1) externalized self-perception rooted in physical limitations since childhood; (2) care as self-sacrifice based on guilt due to premarital pregnancy; (3) silencing the self through three layered strategies—physical-rational, relational, and temporal; and (4) divided self, reflected in the gap between calm external expression and unexpressed internal suffering. These findings confirm that self-silencing in domestic violence victims is an adaptive strategy formed through the interaction of personal, relational, and socio-cultural factors, not simply a fixed personality trait.
