Abstract
Background: Early adolescence (11–14 years old) is a period marked by physical changes and puberty that can increase the risk of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI), particularly when personal hygiene is poor. UTI are commonly caused by Escherichia coli bacteria, a risk exacerbated by habits such as holding in urine, insufficient fluid intake, and improper genital cleaning techniques. Adolescents' limited knowledge regarding UTI prevention highlights the need for health education delivered via video media. Objective: To analyze the difference in adolescents' knowledge levels regarding UTI prevention before and after receiving education through video media. Methods: This was a quantitative study utilizing a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test approach. The study population consisted of all students at SMP Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Palembang, with total sampling employed. Data were collected using knowledge questionnaires administered before and after the video-based education session. Result: Among the 65 respondents, the majority were aged 11–14 years 47 (74,6%), male 35 (55,6%), and in the eighth grade 40 (63,5%). Prior to the education, the majority of respondents 35 (55,6%) possessed a low level of knowledge. Following the education, knowledge levels improved; the majority of respondents demonstrated a sufficient level of knowledge 39 (61,9%), while the remainder demonstrated a good level 24 (38,1%). The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (p ≤ 0.05), indicating a significant difference in knowledge levels before and after the education. Suggestion: Adolescents are encouraged to improve and maintain good personal hygiene by adopting clean and healthy lifestyle habits to prevent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).
