Abstract
: Caring is the core of nursing practice, especially in intensive care units (ICU) where the level of complexity and work pressure is high. However, the implementation of caring by nurses in ICU settings still faces various challenges, such as workload and time constraints. In this context, Swanson’s Theory of Caring provides an important framework to understand how nurses deliver patient-centered care. Objective: This study aimed to explore nurses’ experiences in implementing caring in the intensive care unit based on Swanson’s Theory. Methods : This study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The participants were five ICU nurses selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using an interview guide and analyzed using Colaizzi’s method. Result: The results of the study identified 11 themes, including nurses’ perceptions of caring, forms of caring implementation, inhibiting and supporting factors, patient responses, efforts to maintain patients’ hope, understanding of patients’ conditions and feelings, fulfillment of patients’ spiritual needs, efforts to motivate patients, and nurses’ expectations regarding the implementation of caring in the ICU. In conclusion, the implementation of caring in the ICU is influenced by various internal and external factors. Therefore, ICU nurses are expected to improve their knowledge of caring based on Swanson’s Theory through training and seminars. Nurses are also encouraged to be more sensitive to patients’ emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs, as well as to enhance therapeutic communication with patients and their families.
