Abstract
Background : Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that can lead to serious complications, including diabetic foot ulcers, which increase the risk of infection and amputation. Foot self-care is a crucial preventive measure; however, limited patient knowledge remains a challenge. Effective health education is therefore essential to improve awareness of diabetic foot care Objective : To assess differences in knowledge of diabetic foot care among patients with diabetes mellitus before and after health education at Puskesmas Sosial Palembang. Methods : This quantitative study applied a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design in June 2026, involving 65 purposively selected respondents. Data were collected using a diabetic foot care knowledge questionnaire and audiovisual media (video). Descriptive statistics were used for univariate analysis, while the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was employed for bivariate analysis at α=0.05. Result : Prior to intervention, most respondents had poor knowledge (50.8%), followed by moderate (35.4%) and good (13.8%). After intervention, the majority demonstrated good knowledge (73.8%) and moderate knowledge (26.2%), with none remaining in the poor category. The Wilcoxon test yielded p=0.001 (p<0.05), confirming a significant improvement in knowledge after education. Conclusion : Audiovisual-based education effectively enhanced patients’ knowledge of diabetic foot care. Suggestion : Structured educational programs should be integrated into primary health services to strengthen promotive and preventive strategies against diabetic foot complications.
