Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a developmental stage characterized by rapid physical, psychological, social, and reproductive changes. Insufficient knowledge regarding the impacts of masturbation may lead to adverse consequences for adolescent health and well-being. Therefore, health education is needed to enhance adolescents’ understanding of the impacts of masturbation and to promote informed health-related behaviors. Objective: To determine the differences in knowledge before and after health education regarding the impact of masturbation among male adolescents at SMA IBA Palembang. Methods: This study utilized a two-group pre-test and post-test design with a research population of 37 students selected via total sampling technique, consisting of 18 respondents in the intervention group and 19 respondents in the control group. The intervention was delivered through health education using audiovisual media. Data were collected using a questionnaire on knowledge of the impacts of masturbation and analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: Before receiving education in the intervention group, most respondents had a low level of knowledge (50.0%). After the education, the good knowledge level increased (66.7%) and the low knowledge level decreased (5.6%). The Wilcoxon test results showed a significant difference between the knowledge levels before and after education in the intervention group (p=0.001). In the control group, no significant difference was found between the pre-test and post-test scores (p=0.083). Furthermore, the post-test comparison between the intervention group and the control group showed a significant difference (p=0.000). Conclusion: Health education regarding the impact of masturbation was effective in improving knowledge among male adolescents in the intervention group. Health education can be utilized as a strategy to enhance adolescents' reproductive health knowledge in the school setting. Suggestion: Adolescents are expected to understand and apply knowledge about the adverse effects of excessive masturbation to promote and maintain their overall health
