Abstract

Background: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease characterized by chronic airway inflammation. It causes dyspnea, hypoxia, and tachypnea; if not managed properly, it can lead to respiratory failure and status asthmaticus. The Buteyko breathing technique based on principles of slow breathing and nasal inhalation is employed to reduce airway constriction, thereby alleviating shortness of breath, improving oxygen saturation, and normalizing respiratory rate. Objective: To determine the differences in the degree of dyspnea, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate before and after the application of the Buteyko breathing technique. Methods: This was a quantitative study using a quasi-experimental, one-group pre-test and post-test design. The study was conducted in the inpatient wards (floors 6, 7, and 8) of Siti Fatimah Regional General Hospital (RSUD). A total sampling method was used, involving 24 respondents. Data collection tools included the mMRC dyspnea scale, as well as instruments to measure oxygen saturation and respiratory rate. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate methods, specifically the Wilcoxon statistical test. Results: The mean age of respondents was 44 years; the majority were male (n=14; 58.3%). Univariate analysis showed no change in the mMRC dyspnea scale, an increase in oxygen saturation of 1.92%, and a decrease in respiratory rate of 2.12 breaths/minute. Wilcoxon analysis revealed no significant differences before and after the Buteyko technique intervention regarding the degree of dyspnea (p = 1.000), oxygen saturation (p = 1.000), and respiratory rate (p = 1.000). Recommendations: Respondents are encouraged to practice the Buteyko breathing technique regularly, and Siti Fatimah Regional General Hospital is advised to implement a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) regarding the Buteyko breathing technique.
