Abstract
Background: The combination of advanced age, multiple comorbidities, severe complications, and high dependence on medication makes hypertension one of the most frequent, high risk, and complex health problems in older adults. Benson’s relaxation technique emerges as a complementary non pharmacological intervention that integrates deep breathing exercises with the focused repetition of a spiritual phrase to stimulate a relaxation response in the hypothalamus. Objective: To evaluate the implementation of Benson's relaxation technique in reducing blood pressure among elderly residents with hypertension at the Dharma Bhakti Palembang Nursing Home. Methods: This Nurse's Final Scientific Paper utilized a qualitative descriptive case study design with a multiple case design approach, conducted on 3 hypertensive elderly residents as the managed subjects. The Benson relaxation intervention was routinely administered for 10–15 minutes, where subjects recited their chosen spiritual phrase in sync with a slow breathing rhythm. Results: The intervention applied for 3 consecutive days showed clinically effective results. Based on hemodynamic evaluation, there was a specific average reduction in all three subjects, namely a decrease in systolic blood pressure of 9–10 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure of 3–5 mmHg. The specific reductions were observed in Mrs. A (10/3 mmHg), Mrs. N (10/4 mmHg), and Mrs. S (9/5 mmHg). This effect occurred because spiritual phrase stimulation was able to reduce sympathetic nervous system activity and trigger peripheral vasodilation. Conclusion: Benson's relaxation therapy is proven effective in lowering blood pressure among the elderly with hypertension. This holistic intervention is highly recommended as a safe and cost-effective independent nursing care program to reduce medication dependency in nursing homes.
