Abstract

Bacgraound: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and remains a major health issue in Indonesia. One of the symptoms frequently experienced by pulmonary TB patients is dyspnea, which can interfere with their activities and quality of life. Aim: To determine the effectiveness of orthopnea positioning in reducing dyspnea among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Methodology: This study employed a descriptive case study approach involving three pulmonary tuberculosis patients experiencing dyspnea in the Janunaraga 1 inpatient ward at Bhayangkara Mohammad Hasan Hospital, Palembang. Orthopnea positioning was applied for three consecutive days with a duration of 5–10 minutes for each session. Result: Following three days of orthopnea positioning, all patients demonstrated improved respiratory status, indicated by increased oxygen saturation, decreased respiratory rate, reduced use of accessory respiratory muscles, decreased dyspnea complaints, and improved comfort during rest. Conclusion: Positioning patients in the orthopneic position is effective in reducing dyspnea and improving oxygenation status in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. This intervention can be employed as a simple, easily implemented independent nursing measure to help manage respiratory distress in pulmonary TB patients.
