Abstract

Background: Stroke can cause swallowing complications or dysphagia, which leads to aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition, and even death. The knowledge and attitudes of nurses play a crucial role and depend heavily on their internal competence, particularly cognitive and affective aspects, in determining the success of dysphagia screening performed by nurses. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between nurses' knowledge and attitudes with the implementation of dysphagia screening. Method: This research is quantitative with a cross-sectional design. The respondents were nurses in the Emergency Department, selected using a total sampling method consisting of 40 respondents. Data collection tools used were questionnaires on knowledge, attitudes, and dysphagia screening adapted from various literature sources. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Kendall's Tau-B statistical test. Results: Univariate analysis showed that the maximum age of respondents was 50 years and the minimum was 23 years. The majority of respondents were female (24 people, 60%), and 37 respondents (92.5%) had worked for more than 1 year. Regarding knowledge, 23 respondents (57.5%) had moderate knowledge, 7 (17.5%) had good knowledge, and 10 (25%) had poor knowledge. Regarding attitudes, 24 respondents (60%) had fair attitudes, 8 (20%) had good attitudes, and 8 (20%) had poor attitudes. Respondents who had good screening were 30 (70%), fair screening 9 (22.5%), and poor screening 1 (17.5%). Bivariate analysis for the knowledge variable yielded a value of 0.000, indicating a very strong relationship between nurses' knowledge and dysphagia screening in stroke patients. Bivariate analysis for the attitude variable yielded a value of 0.007, indicating a very weak relationship between nurses' attitudes and dysphagia screening in stroke patients. Conclusion: Nurses' knowledge and attitudes are interrelated predisposing factors in improving the quality of dysphagia screening for stroke patients.
