Abstract

Background: Storytelling is an effective educational technique that transforms knowledge and attitudes through emotional narratives, simplifying complex health issues for better comprehension. This innovative approach is urgent amid Indonesia's Diabetes Mellitus (DM) crisis, now threatening adolescents with case surges up to 70-fold due to unhealthy lifestyles. Given the low understanding and preventive attitudes among adolescents in South Sumatra from preliminary studies, this research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of storytelling in enhancing knowledge and early preventive attitudes toward Diabetes Mellitus among adolescents. Objective: To identify differences in adolescence knowledge and attitudes before and after storytelling education on Type 2 DM prevention. Methods: This quantitative study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The population comprised adolescents, with a sample of 43 high school students from SMA Mardi Wacana Palembang selected via total sampling. Research instruments were questionnaires on knowledge and attitudes, with data analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: Most respondents were male (53.5%) and aged 17 years. Post-intervention, significant improvements were observed in knowledge (62.8%) and attitudes (53.5%). The Wilcoxon test confirmed statistically significant differences. Conclusion: There was a significant difference in adolescents' knowledge and attitudes after receiving storytelling education. Recommendations: Respondents are encouraged to consistently adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent Type 2 DM. Future researchers should develop more clinically specific questionnaires while prioritizing narrative (storytelling) approaches to make instruments more engaging and accessible.
