Abstract

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Psychological stress and negative thoughts are known as triggering factors that can exacerbate psoriasis recurrence. Patients with psoriasis tend to experience anxiety, overthinking, and sleep disturbances which may affect the stability of their clinical condition. One of the non-pharmacological nursing interventions that focuses on psychological stress management is thought stopping. Objective: To analyze the implementation of nursing care using the thought stopping intervention to reduce psychological stress and maintain the stability of psoriasis severity in patients with psoriasis. Methods: The method used in this study was a case study involving three psoriasis patients with different levels of severity. The thought stopping intervention was implemented for two months through several meetings for evaluation. Data collection was carried out using nursing assessment, the Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI), and the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10). Results: The results of the implementation of the thought stopping intervention showed a decrease in stress and anxiety levels in all patients. During the intervention period, no worsening of the clinical condition of psoriasis was found. Subjective complaints such as itching decreased, and the patients’ skin condition tended to remain stable, although PASI was not re-measured quantitatively. Conclusion: The thought stopping intervention can be used as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention to manage psychological stress in patients with psoriasis.
