Abstract

Background: Low Birth Weight (LBW) infants are a group of neonates who are highly susceptible to thermoregulatory disorders, particularly hypothermia. This condition is caused by limited subcutaneous fat reserves, a relatively large body surface area, and the immaturity of the temperature regulation system. If not addressed immediately, hypothermia can trigger various serious complications in newborns, such as hypoxia, sepsis, hypoglycemia, apnea, and failure to gain weight, which ultimately contribute to increased neonatal morbidity and mortality. One non-pharmacological nursing intervention that can be done to prevent hypothermia is Nesting care, which is a technique of positioning the baby using supports to create a comfortable, stable environment that resembles the intrauterine position. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of Nesting care for LBW infants as an effort to increase the body temperature of hypothermic babies. Method: This application uses a descriptive case study with a nursing process approach involving 3 participants. The intervention provided was nesting care for 3 days with a duration of 30 minutes performed once a day. Results: The study results showed that after Nesting care was provided, two out of three Partisipants experienced a decrease in body temperature approaching normal values by the third day, indicated by reduced crying and longer periods of quiet sleep compared to before the intervention. Body temperature measurements and observation of the baby's condition were conducted periodically to assess the effectiveness of the intervention, with a temperature increase of around 0.2°C occurring in 3 participants by the end of the intervention. Conclusion: Nesting care can be used toincrease the body temperature of low birth weight infants experiencing hypothermia
