Abstract

Background: Increased gastric residue will have an impact on delaying the provision of nutrients that should be adequately administered to speed up the healing process. CKD patients who are treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are at risk of gastrointestinal function disorders such as decreased intestinal motility and constipation due to immobilization, fluid restriction, and the use of certain medications. Independent therapy that nurses can do is abdominal massage which can stimulate intestinal peristalsis, improve local circulation, and help with elimination without increasing the pharmacological burden on the kidneys. Objective : to determine the effect of abdominal massage on the reduction of gastric residue volume in CKD patients in the ICU. Methods:This scientific study employed a case study design using abdominal massage therapy as the intervention. A total of three respondents participated in this study. The intervention was conducted for three consecutive days, with each session lasting approximately 10–15 minutes. Results:The implementation of abdominal massage therapy demonstrated that all three respondents experienced a reduction in gastric residual volume after the intervention was performed for three consecutive days. The average decrease in gastric residual volume ranged from 50 cc to 75 cc. Conclusion: Abdominal massage is a safe and effective non-pharmacological nursing intervention to help reduce the volume of gastric residue and support enteral nutrient tolerance in CKD patients in the ICU.
