Abstract
Background: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease characterized by chronic airway inflammation and respiratory symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which vary over time in frequency and severity. This condition is accompanied by expiratory airflow limitation that can be either reversible or persistent. In asthma patients, especially those treated in the Emergency Department (ED), a common nursing problem is ineffective airway clearance caused by mucus accumulation and bronchospasm. Objective: This study aimed to identify and analyze nursing care for asthma patients with ineffective airway clearance through the administration of warm water intake. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects included three asthma patients in the ED. Airway clearance was assessed before and after the administration of 200 ml warm water, without a control group. Parameters evaluated included cough effectiveness, sputum production, additional breath sounds, respiratory rate, and breathing pattern. Results: Warm water intake helped improve airway clearance in asthma patients, indicated by increased cough effectiveness, decreased sputum production, reduced wheezing, improved breathing patterns, and decreased respiratory rate. However, the intervention did not fully restore all parameters to normal, indicating the need for continued collaborative therapy. Conclusion: Warm water intake can be applied as a supportive nursing intervention in the ED to enhance airway clearance in asthma patients. Further studies are recommended with larger sample sizes, more structured observation periods, and consideration of time constraints and emergency conditions in the ED.
