Abstract

Background Surgery is a medical procedure performed by opening a part of the body and ending with the closure or suturing of the wound area. Surgical procedures often trigger anxiety in preoperative patients. Therefore, an intervention is needed to help reduce anxiety levels in patients before undergoing surgery. One intervention that can be applied is classical music therapy. Music therapy is a therapeutic intervention that uses music as a medium and has benefits in supporting the healing process as well as providing relaxation for patients. Objective The objective of this case study is to reduce anxiety levels through classical music therapy in preoperative patients in the implementation of nursing care. Methods The design used in this study was a case study with a nursing care approach conducted on three respondents. The intervention provided was classical music therapy using headphones. The therapy was administered for 5 minutes and given twice to each respondent. This case study aimed to explore the implementation of nursing care by providing classical music therapy to preoperative patients experiencing anxiety. Results The results of the nursing care implementation showed that classical music therapy was able to reduce anxiety levels in the three patients. Before the therapy was administered, the patients experienced severe anxiety with an average score of 19. After receiving classical music therapy, the anxiety levels decreased to moderate to mild anxiety with scores ranging from 7–13. In the three preoperative patients, symptoms such as worry, restlessness, and visible tension were reduced after the classical music therapy was given. Conclusion Classical music therapy can reduce anxiety levels in preoperative patients in the process of nursing care. Suggestion It is recommended that nurses apply classical music therapy as one of the interventions in providing nursing care for patients experiencing anxiety, especially preoperative patients.
