Abstract

Background: Infectious diseases such as diarrhea and helminthiasis remain major health problems among school-aged children. The lack of handwashing practices is often caused by children's low knowledge regarding the importance of hand hygiene. Health education using video media is considered effective as it provides engaging visual and auditory information for elementary school students. Objective: This study aims to determine the difference in knowledge levels before and after providing handwashing education through video media among elementary school students. Methods: This quantitative study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The population consisted of all 6th-grade students at SD Xaverius 4 Palembang, with a total sample of 59 respondents selected using the total sampling technique. The research instrument was a validated and reliable knowledge questionnaire, and data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: The findings showed an average respondent age of 11.61 years. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test results showed a p-value of <0.000. Conclusion: There is a significant difference in children's knowledge before and after receiving handwashing education. Suggestions: Schools are expected to provide adequate handwashing facilities and utilize visual educational media routinely. Future researchers are encouraged to develop this study by measuring behavioral aspects (psychomotor) and extending the observation period to assess respondents' memory retention.
