Abstract

English is taught in all Indonesian schools and is important for education and jobs. Students struggle with reading due to vocabulary issues, lack of motivation, and deficiency teaching methods. This study used qualitative methods, collecting data through tests, questionnaires, and interviews to assess students' reading abilities. Population includes students at Musi Charitas Catholic University. A sample of 44 students were taken from different degree programs. The data analysis method in this study uses data reduction identifies key challenges for students, data is displayed through brief descriptions and categories, and verification involves drawing conclusions that may change. The study concluded that both internal factors and external factors significantly influenced students' English reading ability. These suggestions include fostering an English-friendly home environment, using engaging teaching methods, and encouraging consistent practice among students to improve their reading skills. Overall, this study highlights the need for targeted interventions to support students in overcoming these barriers and achieving better English reading skills.
