Abstract

Background: Hospitalization is a condition that requires a child to be treated in a hospital. This often leads to anxiety, tension, restlessness, withdrawal, and even trauma. Various strategies have been suggested to reduce the impact of hospitalization-related anxiety through distraction techniques; one such play therapy suitable for preschool children is playing with puzzles. Puzzles encourage children to focus, thereby training patience, stimulating concentration, and providing a sense of comfort and joy that can reduce restlessness. Methods: This study employed a descriptive case study method with a nursing care process approach. The respondents consisted of three preschool children who experienced anxiety due to hospitalization. Puzzle play therapy was administered using puzzle play tools, and anxiety levels were measured using the Facial Image Scale (FIS). The intervention was conducted for three consecutive days with a duration of 15 minutes per session. Results: The results showed that after the implementation of puzzle play therapy, anxiety levels decreased in all respondents. In respondent 1, the anxiety score decreased from scale 5 to scale 1; in respondent 2, from scale 4 to scale 1; and in respondent 3, from scale 5 to scale 1. These findings indicate that puzzle play therapy is effective in reducing hospitalization-related anxiety in preschool children with Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever. Suggestion: It is hoped that puzzle play therapy will become a routine non-pharmacological intervention to reduce anxiety due to hospitalization in preschool children with dengue hemorrhagic fever
