Abstract

Background: Preoperative patients, particularly those undergoing Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), often experience anxiety related to surgery and anesthesia. Uncontrolled anxiety can lead to physiological changes, including increased blood pressure and heart rate, which can increase the risks of anesthesia and surgery, increased stress hormones (cortisol, adrenaline), and psychological distress. These can include mild anxiety about the procedure or its outcome, increased questioning and a desire for more detailed information, and mild restlessness, potentially disrupting surgical preparation and even delaying the procedure. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to reduce anxiety is classical music therapy. Objective: This study aimed to determine the difference in anxiety levels of preoperative TUR-P patients before and after the administration of classical music therapy at Siti Fatimah Regional Hospital, South Sumatra Province. This study employed a quantitative design using a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, involving 30 preoperative TUR-P patients. Anxiety levels were measured using the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). Classical music therapy was administered once for 15 minutes prior to surgery. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and bivariate analysis with the Wilcoxon test. Methods: The results showed a decrease in anxiety levels after the administration of classical music therapy. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference in anxiety levels before and after the intervention (p-value < 0,05). Results: In conclusion, classical music therapy is effective in reducing anxiety levels among preoperative TUR-P patients. Suggestion: Hospitals are expected to implement classical music as a form of non-pharmacological therapy to reduce anxiety levels in pre-operative patients.
