Abstract

The lives of cart-pushing waste picker mothers on the streets are characterized by various economic constraints, social stigma, and the burden of dual roles as breadwinners and family caregivers. These conditions influence how individuals interpret and give meaning to their lives. This study aimed to explore the meaning of life among cart-pushing waste picker mothers in Palembang City. The study employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Participants were selected using purposive sampling with the following criteria: married women who have children and work as cart-pushing waste picker mothers. The participants consisted of three individuals whose experiences were explored through semi-structured in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The findings revealed three superordinate themes: life attitude, meaning of work, and life hope. The results indicate that the meaning of life among cart-pushing waste picker mothers is constructed through acceptance of life realities, responsibility toward family, and hope for a better future. Meaning in life functions as a source of psychological strength that helps the participants endure the limitations they face in their lives.
