Abstract

Background: Preoperative patients often experience anxiety related to surgical procedures, pain, possible complications, and surgical outcomes. Anxiety levels can be influenced by various factors, particularly family support and type of surgery. Major surgery generally causes higher anxiety levels compared to minor surgery. Family support plays an important role in providing emotional, informational, and instrumental support, which can help reduce patients’ anxiety before surgery. Objective: To determine the relationship between family support and type of surgery with anxiety levels in preoperative patients at Azzahra Pavilion, Siti Fatimah Regional General Hospital, South Sumatra Province in 2025. Methods: This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique was total sampling with a total of 40 preoperative patients. Data were collected using a family support questionnaire and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) and type of surgery. Data analysis included univariate and bivariate analysis using the Kendall Tau-b test. Results: Patients with good family support tended to have lower anxiety levels, while those with poor family support tended to experience higher anxiety levels. Patients undergoing major surgery showed higher anxiety levels compared to those undergoing minor surgery. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between family support and anxiety levels, as well as between type of surgery and anxiety levels (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between family support and type of surgery with anxiety levels in preoperative patients at Azzahra Pavilion, Siti Fatimah Regional General Hospital, South Sumatra Province. Suggestion: The hospital is expected to enhance family support and preoperative anxiety management, particularly for patients undergoing major surgery.
