Abstract

The development of digital technology has influenced adolescents’ behavior, particularly smartphone use in the school environment. One behavior that has emerged is phubbing, which refers to ignoring the surrounding environment due to excessive focus on smartphones. This behavior is assumed to be related to empathy and student engagement in learning. This study aimed to examine the relationship between phubbing and empathy with student engagement among students at Junior High School X Palembang. This research employed a quantitative method with a correlational design. The research subjects consisted of 234 students of Junior High School X Palembang. Data were collected using phubbing, empathy, and student engagement scales and analyzed using correlation analysis. The results showed that phubbing had a negative relationship with student engagement, while empathy had a positive relationship with student engagement. Simultaneously, phubbing and empathy were related to student engagement. These findings indicate the importance of managing smartphone use and developing empathy to enhance student engagement in the learning process.
