Abstract

Background : Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Treatment for pulmonary TB requires patient compliance with regular and comprehensive anti-tuberculosis medication (OTT) to prevent relapse, drug resistance, and disease transmission. In Indonesia, by 2023, the number of pulmonary TB cases is estimated to reach 1,060,000, with a mortality rate of approximately 134,000 people per year, equivalent to 17 deaths every hour. These high incidence and mortality rates indicate that pulmonary TB remains a serious health problem. The success of pulmonary TB treatment depends heavily on patient compliance with OT therapy. Therefore, health education and family support are essential to ensure TB patients undergo treatment regularly and complete their treatment. Objective : To determine the relationship between characteristics and family support with medication adherence in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Methods : This study used a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The research sample consisted of 51 respondents, selected using a total sampling technique. The research instruments were questionnaires on family support and medication adherence. Bivariate data analysis was conducted using the Kendall’s tau-b test. Result : The results of the Kendall's tau-b test for the correlation of education were obtained (p-value = 0.023), correlation of length of suffering (p-value 1.000), and correlation of family support with compliance (p-value 0.027). Conclusion : There is a significant relationship between education and family support and medication adherence in tuberculosis patients.
