Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a cardiovascular disease characterized by a persistent increase in blood pressure. Management of hypertension requires long term treatment. Some side effects may appear such as, drowsiness, dizziness and nausea. Knowledge of side effects is a factor for hypertensive people in undergoing medication adherence. The previous research was obtained from 68 respondents in the category of lack of knowledge (39.7%), and compliance in the non-compliance category (35.3%). Objective: To analyze the relationship between knowledge about drug side effects and adherence to taking hypertension medications in hypertensive patients. Methods: This study used a quantitative method, cross-sectional descriptive correlation design. The sample totaled 52 respondents with a incidental sampling technique. The measuring tool used a questionnaire on the knowledge of drug side effects designed by the researcher, adherence to taking the medication using MMAS-8. The data were analyzed using kendall's tau-b test with a significance value of 5%. Results: The average age of respondents was 55.6 years, the majority were women (57.7%), were second-educated (53.8%), and had hypertension for a long time > 5 years (51.9%). The majority of respondents had sufficient knowledge (73.1%) and high adherence to taking medication (71.2%). There was a relationship between knowledge of drug side effects and medication adherence (p value = 0.008 τ = 0.318) Conclusions: There was a relationship between knowledge of drug side effects and medication adherence, with moderate correlation values. The direction of the positive relationship indicates that the better the respondent's knowledge of the side effects of the drug, the higher the level of adherence to taking the drug.
