Abstract

The Cathedral of St. Mary in Palembang plays an essential role as the center of spiritual and social activities for the Catholic community in South Sumatra. Since the beginning of the Catholic mission in 1921 by the Capuchin Fathers and its continuation by the Priests of the Sacred Heart (SCJ) in 1923, the church has faced numerous challenges, particularly the lack of worship facilities and the growing number of parishioners. The purpose of this study is to explore the history of the establishment of St. Mary Parish, the process of church construction, and the dynamics of community growth to the present day. The main problems encountered in the early period were the absence of a permanent place of worship and the increasing pastoral needs of the faithful. The findings indicate that St. Mary Parish has developed rapidly alongside the expansion of the congregation and the construction of a new church inaugurated in 2023. In addition to serving as the center of the archdiocese, the cathedral symbolizes unity, faith, and the spirit of service, while fostering the growth of Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) as a means of strengthening the faith life at the grassroots level.
