Abstract
Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis often experience thirst due to fluid restriction. Uncontrolled thirst may lead to non-adherence to fluid limitations and negatively affect clinical outcomes. One non-pharmacological intervention used to reduce thirst is sipping ice cubes therapy, which involves sucking ice cubes to stimulate cold receptors in the oral cavity and temporarily inhibit the thirst center in the hypothalamus, thereby reducing thirst without significantly increasing fluid intake. The effectiveness of this therapy is supported by a study conducted by Tampubolon (2024), which reported a reduction in mean thirst intensity scores from 4.80 to 3.10 with a p-value of 0.001. Objective: To determine the difference in thirst intensity before and after the administration of sipping ice cubes therapy in hemodialysis patients. Methods: This study employed a quantitative pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The population consisted of 36 respondents, with a sample of 36 respondents selected through total sampling. Inclusion criteria included patients undergoing hemodialysis, able to communicate verbally, and willing to participate. Thirst intensity was measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: The mean thirst intensity score decreased from 5.25 (moderate thirst) at pre-test to 1.88 (mild thirst) at post-test. The mean category score also decreased from 3.06 to 2.06. The Wilcoxon test showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant difference in thirst intensity before and after the administration of sipping ice cubes therapy in hemodialysis patients. Recommendation: There was a significant difference in thirst intensity before and after the administration of sipping ice cubes therapy in hemodialysis patients.
