Abstract

Background: Self-concept is an individual’s perception of oneself, encompassing perceptions and evaluations of abilities, appearance, and personal identity. During adolescence, self-concept is influenced by the social environment and family parenting style, where adequate social support and positive parenting play an important role in shaping a positive self-concept. Objective: To determine the relationship between social support and parenting style with self-concept among adolescents at SMA Methodist 4 Talang Kelapa Palembang. Methods: This study employed a quantitative descriptive correlational design involving 150 students selected through total sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires on social support, parenting style, and self-concept, and analyzed using Kendall’s tau-b test. Results: Most respondents were middle adolescents (73.3%), had moderate social support (88%), experienced good parenting styles (90%), and demonstrated a positive self-concept (85.3%). There was a significant relationship between social support and self-concept (τ = –0.187; p = 0.022) as well as between parenting style and self-concept (τ = 0.176; p = 0.032). Conclusion: Better social support and parenting styles received by adolescents are associated with a more positive self-concept. Social support from family, peers, and the school environment, along with positive parenting practices, plays a crucial role in the development of adolescents’ self-concept. Recommendations: Schools are encouraged to enhance social support programs through counseling services and peer group activities. Parents are advised to apply more responsive and communicative parenting styles. Future research may include additional variables such as self-confidence or family environmental factors to enrich the findings.
