Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a period of transition from children to adults, adolescents with an age range of 12-21 years. Adolescence will experience various developments, one of which is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence in adolescents can be influenced by parenting styles that include authoritarian, democratic, permissive, given from parents, and the use of gadgets. The use of gadgets with increasingly advanced technology can affect emotional intelligence in adolescents. Objective: This study is known to have a relationship between parenting, gadget addiction and emotional intelligence in adolescents. Methods: This type of study is a Quantitative cross-sectional design. with stratified proportional random sampling techniques. With a sample of 72 respondents, the measuring tool used questionnaires about parenting, gadget addiction, and emotional intelligence. The data collection process is by providing questionnaires directly to respondents. Data analysis used the Fisher's Exact and Kendall tau-b tests.Results: research results for democratic parenting as many as 63 respondents (87.5%), high gadget addiction as many as 58 respondents (80.6%), moderate emotional intelligence as many as 46 respondents (63.9%), and high (36.1%). The results of the correlation test showed that there was no significant relationship between parenting and emotional intelligence in adolescents at SMA Xaverius 2 Palembang, with negative relationship direction (v=0.133; p=0.908), there was no significant relationship between gadget addiction and emotional intelligence in adolescents at SMA Xaverius 2 Palembang and the direction of negative relationship (τ= -0.06; p=0.561). Conclusions: Shows no significant relationship between parenting and emotional intelligence, no significant relationship between gadget addiction and emotional intelligence, weak correlation strength and negative direction.
