Abstract

Background : Mental health is a condition that supports adolescents' well-being in thinking, behaving, and forming social relationships. Mental health disorders are characterized by anxiety, depression, stress, withdrawal, feelings of worthlessness, and even self-harm. If left untreated, the impacts can include social isolation, academic difficulties, risky behavior, and stunted personal and social development. Objective : To determine the relationship between parenting patterns and peer groups with the mental health of adolescents at SMP Xaverius 6 Palembang Methods : The quantitative method used a cross-sectional approach with a sample of 73 respondents using total sampling techniques. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire. Data analysis techniques used the chi-square test and the Kendall-tau test. Result : The majority of respondents were 13 years old, female, namely 41 (56.2%), and came from highly educated families Higher education (college) was 35 (47.9%). The dominant parenting style was democratic as many as 55 (75.3%), peer groups were classified as adequate as many as 37 (50.7%), and most respondents did not indicate mental disorders as many as 44 (60.3%). The chi-square test showed a significant relationship between parenting patterns and mental health obtained p value 0.038 <0.05, while the Kendall's Tau test showed no significant relationship between peer groups and adolescent mental health obtained p value 0.057 > 0.05. Suggestion : This research is expected to encourage teenagers to care about mental health, maintain good relationships with peers, and establish open communication with parents.
