Abstract
Background: Hypertension, defined as elevated blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg, is a chronic non-communicable disease (NCD) and a leading cause of cardiovascular complications. This condition is often asymptomatic, but it can lead to stroke, kidney failure, and organ damage. Risk factors include unhealthy lifestyles such as excessive salt consumption, lack of physical activity, smoking, stress, and an excessive body mass index (BMI). Therefore, hypertension management requires adopting a healthy lifestyle and weight management. Objective: To determine the relationship between a healthy lifestyle and body mass index with blood pressure in hypertension patients at the Palembang Community Health Center. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 86 respondents selected using the total sampling technique. Data were collected using a healthy lifestyle questionnaire, scale, stadiometer, and digital sphygmomanometer. Data analysis used the Kendall Tau-b test. Result: The average age of respondents was 58.21 years; the majority were women 56 (75.6%) and had secondary education (high school) 47 (54.7%). Most had uncontrolled blood pressure 55 (64%), normal BMI 47 (54.7%), and a healthy lifestyle in the sufficient category 53 (61.6%). This means that there is no significant relationship between a healthy lifestyle and blood pressure, p-value (0.025) < α (0.05) with a correlation coefficient (τ) = -0.244. There is no significant relationship between body mass index and blood pressure, p-value (0.679) > α (0.05) with a correlation coefficient (τ) = -0.043. Conclusion: There was no significant relationship between a healthy lifestyle and body mass index with blood pressure among hypertensive patients. Suggestion: It is hoped that it will be useful as additional literature with the same variables and is also expected to provide education about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
