Abstract

Background : Uric acid is a byproduct of purine metabolism. Excessive levels of uric acid can lead to hyperuricemia, gout, and other complications. Cases are increasing in Indonesia, but public awareness and preventive practices remain low, leaving the risk of elevated uric acid levels high. Objective : determine the relationship between knowledge and prevention of increased uric acid levels in adults in the city of Palembang. Methods : This research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach with a sample of 60 respondents taken using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire, and the data analysis technique used the Kendall's tau-b test. Result : The average age of respondents is 40.02, the majority of respondents are female as many as 43 (71.1%), the majority of respondents have a high school education of 36 (60.0%), the majority of sufficient knowledge as many as 33 (55.0%), the majority of moderate preventive behavior as many as 52 (86.7%), there is a relationship between knowledge and prevention of increased uric acid levels with a p-value (0.024) < α (0.05). Correlation coefficient (t) = 0.280. Suggestion : Respondents are expected to increase their knowledge about gout, especially the causative factors, foods to avoid, and preventive measures that can be applied in daily life, such as regulating diet, increasing water consumption, and exercising regularly.
