Abstract

Background: Elderly individuals experience physiological changes, particularly in the cardiovascular system, which often lead to increased blood pressure due to decreased cardiac output. Elevated blood pressure in the elderly poses serious health risks such as heart attack, stroke, disability, kidney disorders, and even death. Blood pressure can be controlled through pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. One of the non-pharmacological interventions that can be applied is guided imagery, a relaxation technique that uses positive mental visualization to promote relaxation and reduce blood pressure. Objective: This study aimed to determine the difference in blood pressure before and after guided imagery therapy among the elderly. Method: This quantitative research applied a One Group Pretest–Posttest design involving 32 elderly respondents selected through total sampling. The intervention was conducted three times a week. Blood pressure was measured using a digital sphygmomanometer and observation sheets. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: The majority of respondents were in the elderly age group (53.1%) and female (71.9%). The percentage of respondents in the normal blood pressure category increased from 37.5% before the intervention to 65.6% after guided imagery therapy. The Wilcoxon test showed a p-value of 0.006, indicating a significant difference in blood pressure before and after the intervention. Conclusion: Guided imagery therapy effectively reduces blood pressure in the elderly and may serve as a practical non-pharmacological intervention in nursing care for elderly patients with hypertension.
