Abstract

Background : A young mother is a mother who gives birth to a child under the age of 21years. The phenomenon of young motherhood refers to the experiences and challenges faced, such as adapting to a new role as a mother, life changes, and difficulties in carrying out the role. For young mothers, taking on the role of mother is a first experience that is sometimes challenging but also joyful. Adapting to the roles faced by young mothers, including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, caring for, and educating children, causes mothers to experience various difficulties in carrying out their roles. Objective : This study aims to explore the experiences of young mothers in carrying out their role as mothers. Methods : This study employed a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach. Five participants were selected based on participant criteria using purposive sampling. Data analysis was performed using Colaizzi analysis. Result : This research produced 10 themes, namely the reasons for marrying young, the role of a mother, the difficulties faced, efforts made to overcome difficulties, the impact felt by being a young mother, feelings when first becoming a young mother, problems experienced during the postpartum period, feelings of caring for children, support received, a future full of hope. Suggestion : Participants are advised to share more with their parents, in-laws, neighbors and people around them to increase their knowledge and experience while carrying out their role as mothers
